From the Principal,

The start to the 2023-2024 school year has been a great one and we can’t wait to see what the remainder of the year brings for our Scott Teays Tigers!  We believe the beginning days of school help set the tone for a successful school year.  For this reason, during the first seven days, we heavily emphasize practicing classroom and school wide systems, routines, and procedures, as well as team building and goal setting.  Since STE is a Leader In Me school, a substantial portion of our focus within the first seven days is also spent teaching and reviewing the Habits within the Leader In Me program.  The habits embedded within LIM are important in helping students reach their maximum potential: Being Proactive (You’re in Charge), Begin With the End in Mind (Have a Plan), Put First Things First (Work First, Then Play), Think Win-Win (Everyone Can Win), Seek First to Understand, Then to Be Understood (Listen Before You Talk), Synergize (Together is Better), Sharpen the Saw (Balance Feels Best), Find Your Voice (Inspire Others). We also promote having a Growth Mindset in all we do, so time was spent investigating a fixed versus growth mindset. Our students understand that having a growth mindset will allow them to “grow their brain” this school year and not give up, even when at first, they don’t succeed. With a growth mindset, we say, we are not there... YET, but we will get there!

We expect our students to strive for excellence in all they do, and we trust you will join us in encouraging your child to be the best he or she can be this school year!  Arriving on time and prepared, giving maximum effort, and being committed to working hard in the classroom goes a long way! We believe Success Takes Everyone, and we encourage you to be as active in the school as your schedule allows.

Please stay abreast of happenings through school and classroom newsletters, Class Dojo, Schoology, emails, and the school phone notification system.  It takes all of us working together to achieve ultimate student success, and we are off to a great start!
Looking forward to a Tigeriffic year,
~Mrs. Isaacs

Save Around Coupon Book Fundraiser
Our annual coupon book fundraiser is in full swing.   The funds from this fundraiser will be used to provide academic supplies and materials and student and staff incentives throughout the year. This year’s program offers a FREE coupon book to those that sell 5 books up to a maximum of 2 free books. Each student who sells 5 books will receive a visit to the WV Mobile Gaming Trailer.  Our students absolutely love earning time in the gaming trailer!

Order forms and payment are due:  September 12

Orders will be sent home shortly after the fundraiser closes.

We greatly appreciate your participation as this fundraiser.  We use the funds generated from this fundraiser to help fund some ‘extras’ for our students to enjoy such as classroom projects, equipment, supplies, school-wide learning assemblies, etc.) If you are unable to participate, we understand. Simply return the sample coupon book back to the school. Thanks in advance for your support!

Classroom Food Policy

Please be aware that to protect those with food allergies and be compliant with state nutritional guidelines, we do not allow outside food brought into our classrooms to celebrate special occasions such as birthdays. Thank you for your understanding and cooperation.  You are welcome to send a non-food treat!

Family Informational Event
We are excited to offer a Family Informational Event on Tuesday October 3rd from 6pm-7pm. During this time, families will have the opportunity to learn more about the instruction, programs, and educational tools that impact your child each day. The evening will consist of four rotations where teachers will share about the Science of Reading, iReady, Technology, and other information.  We look forward to seeing you!

Check Out What Happened Over the Summer!
The summer allows us to focus on facility updates. Our playground received additional paint over the summer. A painter brought the faded dome back to life as well as other faded resin pieces, tables, benches, umbrella, and the 3-hole ball game. We are still awaiting the installation of a new taller barrier wall to increase the depth of our mulch, a tether ball pole, new swings, a Ten Spin, a Gaga Pit, and a fresh load of playground approved mulch. The installers are running behind, but hopefully they will get to us soon. We feel confident our students will LOVE the updates!

~We added topsoil and re-seeded the soccer and kickball fields.
~The old air conditioners located high in the cafeteria were removed and sealed off.
~The K/1 and 2/3 staff bathroom floors were refinished, and the baseboard replaced
~All schools are receiving facial recognition cameras at entrances for added safety and security.
~All schools will have Emergent 3 Software App to communicate for added safety and security.

Did You Know...Great Things are Happening
Scott Teays Elementary scored 10th in Math and tied 20th in Reading in the state of West Virginia after taking the West Virginia General Summative Assessment in the Spring. We are proud of our students' accomplishments and appreciative of the expertise of our teachers and their commitment to student learning.  Putnam County Schools was the number one in the state in both Math and Reading for the second consecutive year.

Sign up for Class Dojo
School wide, teachers use Class Dojo to communicate with families this year.  You should have received an invitation to join.  If you have not already done so, please download the app on your phone and accept the invitation to join your child’s classroom.  Teachers share lots of exciting information via Dojo and often send pictures that provide a glimpse into the classroom and the learning taking place.

THANK YOU!
Many thanks to Gateway Church for helping to spruce up our grounds before school started.   We appreciate their commitment to Scott Teays and our community.  We wouldn’t be looking so GOOD if it were not for their generosity and care!   Two of our families who head up our Beautification Committee, the Anthony and Nichols families, provided mowing, trimming, and pressure washing services prior to our Open House, and we are very appreciative!
We would also like to thank Good Shepherd Church and Teays Valley Church of God for delicious first week snacks.

Husson’s Pizza Night
Husson’s Pizza is a long-standing business partner of STE. The 3rd Thursday of each month is ‘Husson’s Pizza Day/Night.’  Simply place an order and mention STE, and Husson’s will donate 25% of your order total to our school playground fund.  It is truly a WIN/WIN!  Our first Pizza Night will be Thursday, September 21st!  Be sure to tell them your order is for Scott Teays!!

Student Drop Off
If you choose to transport your child in the mornings, be sure to ONLY use our parent/student drop off zone behind our building or park along Scott Lane and use the sidewalk leading to the back door.  Please follow the direction of our staff members on duty and pull forward to the last staff member toward the exit gate.  Parents should never exit the vehicle.  Staff members are on duty to assist and make sure your child makes it safely to the door.  Other supervising adults are positioned in the hallways for student safety.  Please note: If your child arrives after 7:25, he or she will be marked tardy.  Tardy students must be signed in by a parent or guardian at the front office.

We do ask that you obey the traffic sign and TURN RIGHT when exiting STE property at the Dairy Queen.  Turning right keeps our traffic moving.  On the days when traffic backs up, the biggest contributing factor is vehicles waiting to turn left, and as a result, our circle becomes gridlocked.  Being late due to traffic is not an excused tardy.
What can help?
• Utilize the county provided bus system
• Carpool
• Leave early because our traffic is unpredictable
• Be sure your child is ready and exits the vehicle quickly

Be sure to check out “Scott Teays Elementary PTO” on Facebook for school updates and information***

Be Proactive, Plan Ahead and Begin With the End in Mind

Under the Leader in Me, we teach our students to begin with the end in mind.  We also teach to be proactive and plan ahead.  We ask that you consider developing an evening and morning routine with your child to help ensure a successful school day.  It is important that your student arrive at school on time with everything he or she needs.  Perhaps consider a checklist and let your child be responsible for checking that everything needed for the next day is packed up and ready to go.  This is a WIN/WIN…your child grows in responsibility and is prepared for a great day of learning!

When items are forgotten and dropped off to school after instruction begins, we cannot interrupt instruction to deliver items.  Items will be delivered during non-instructional times.
